Prognosis

The prognosis of a hematoma is generally very good. However, if complications occur, or if the hematoma is merely the sign of another disease, the prognosis of the affected person naturally depends on the corresponding complication or the underlying disease. However, in an otherwise healthy patient, complete healing of the hematoma can usually be expected within a few days to weeks.

Prophylaxis

Primarily, haematomas can be avoided by avoiding the accidents or injuries that cause them. Particularly in cases of limited blood coagulability due to a previous illness or a blood-clotting medication, increased attention in everyday life is just as important as in cases of limited mobility or coordination skills. Once an injury has occurred, for example, in the context of an impact, fall or incarceration, the extent of the expected hematoma can be contained by rapidly cooling the affected area, since the removal of heat in the cooled region leads to a narrowing of the vessels located there.
