Prognosis | Lymph nodes in the neck

Prognosis

Hodgkin’s disease (Hodgkin’s lymphoma) is fatal without treatment, but good cure rates can be achieved with modern therapeutic strategies. Depending on the stage of the disease, the cure rate is between 70% and over 90%. Approximately 10% to 20% of patients suffer a second tumor (recurrence) in the years following treatment.

The course and prognosis of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL) varies greatly. Low-malignant NHL often take years to progress, and patients die of uncontrollable infections and bleeding. In highly malignant NHL, a cure can be achieved through intensive therapy.

Conclusion

In the vast majority of cases, swollen lymph nodes in the neck are harmless and can be seen as a sign of activation of the immune system against an acute infection. If the swelling persists for a long time and structural changes are noticeable, one should consult a doctor as a precaution and clarify the cause.
