Prognosis
The healing of an inflamed maxillary sinus is very good thanks to the therapy with antibiotics or surgical treatment. The expansion of the maxillary sinus is sometimes an obstacle for the insertion of an implant in the posterior tooth region if there is not enough bone material available. This is the case if the maxillary sinus has subsided after tooth removal or bone resorption.
In this case, the sinus floor must be raised (sinus lift) by using the patient’s own bone or bone replacement material to make room for the implant to be inserted. The maxillary sinus is in pairs and is located inside the upper jaw. Its expansion is very variable and is therefore often an obstacle during implantation.
Inflammations of the maxillary sinus can originate from either the nose or the teeth. The therapy consists either of the administration of anibiotics or surgical interventions.
