Prognosis of sebaceous gland cysts

Sebaceous cysts are benign tumors of the skin. In most cases, a complete removal of the sebaceous gland cyst results in healing. Trichilemmal cysts of the scalp usually do not lead to recurrences if they are completely removed.

If, however, cyst remains are to remain in the skin, sebaceous gland cysts can develop again at the same place. Epidermoid cysts can also be completely removed. However, underlying diseases such as acne lead to the recurrence of cysts in other parts of the body. Isolated sebaceous gland cysts can, however, be removed completely without recurring.
