Prognosis

As a rule, a kinked foot has a very good prognosis. Often there are hardly any symptoms and complaints even in adults, so that a therapy is not absolutely necessary. With special orthopedic insoles, physiotherapy, weight reduction and the right footwear, any complaints that arise can be treated very well.

Even a child’s twisted foot corrects itself in most cases by itself. If the malposition takes a severe course, it may be necessary for the affected children to wear special orthopedic insoles for up to 3 years. But even in these cases the foot malposition can be corrected to a large extent and does not cause any complaints.

Folded foot for children

If a kinked foot which is diagnosed in an adult is always an illness requiring therapy, this is not necessarily the case with a child’s kinked foot. Children with a pigeon-toed foot usually change the shape of the foot again during the growth phase and should not have a pigeon-toed foot until after the age of 9. Only if the hindfoot is still present after the age of 9 is a visit to an orthopedic surgeon recommended for further clarification.

The causes for the occurrence of a clubfoot in childhood and infancy are mainly genetic. This is due to the fact that buckling of the feet sometimes makes learning to walk much easier. Since the child’s ligamentous apparatus is much weaker than in adults, buckling of the foot helps to maintain stability in the child’s stance and gait.

Over time, however, the child’s foot position should change. If the buckling foot occurs after learning to walk and is therefore acquired, there may be a serious reason behind the change. Especially: can cause a change in the shape of the foot.

The consequences of a fallen arches foot which is still present after the age of 9 can be serious. The higher load on the joints leads to premature wear and tear and thus often to arthrosis of the joints. The knee joint and ankle joint in particular are often affected by consequential damage from a non-treated flat foot. In order to prevent secondary symptoms, parents should pay attention to whether their children’s flat foot is still present after the age of 9 or whether it has receded.

If a hindfoot still exists after this time it is necessary to carry out a therapy as soon as possible. As a rule, a hindfoot in children can be well treated with conservative measures. Especially the use of special insoles as well as physiotherapy can help to treat the child’s fallen arches.

For overweight children, weight reduction is urgently desired. If conservative measures do not lead to success, an operative measure can be considered in individual cases.
