Prognosis | Therapy of peripheral arterial occlusive disease (pAVK)

Prognosis

Since PAVK depends on many factors, it is difficult to make an exact temporal prognosis. However, this depends not only on the stage of the disease but also on the extent to which the causes can be treated. For example, there is a bad prognosis if smoking is not given up.

This and a badly treated diabetes mellitus greatly increase the risk of suffering a recurrence! Amputations are also more frequent. In addition, the extent to which arteriosclerosis has already affected other vessels must be considered.

Complications caused by this include coronary heart disease (CHD), narrowing of the arteries supplying the brain and other diseases resulting from the risk factors. In general, it can be said that a patient with PADC has an average life expectancy of about 10 years less. The main causes of death are heart attack (~60%) and stroke (apoplexy, ~10%).

This is due to the fact that already in stage II half of all patients suffer from CHD. In stage III it is already 90%! In addition, half of all patients in stage III have vasoconstrictions of the brain-supplying arteries caused by arteriosclerosis. Therefore, an examination for CHD and subsequent treatment is extremely important.
