The individual prognosis after the consumption of mold depends on various factors. In particular, the type of fungus as well as the amount and duration of the intake determine the prognosis in each individual case. Small amounts of mold usually do not represent a cause for concern.

However, if symptoms are noticed or larger amounts of mould have been eaten, an early visit to a doctor is crucial for the individual prognosis. If poisoning has occurred, which can lead to complications such as organ damage, the prognosis can be very unfavorable. This is particularly true in the case of tumors and liver or kidney damage.

Prophylaxis

In general, most food should be disposed of in the event of mold infestation in order to avoid health hazards. The large-scale cutting out of mold with the actual removal of all traces of mold and toxins is only possible in individual cases. From a temperature of -18°C onwards, the proliferation of mould can usually be stopped.

Thus, food in a freezer compartment is usually spared the development of mold and can be enjoyed for longer. In order to delay the development of mold, the food should be stored clean and dry.
