Propentofylline

Propentofylline is a form of film-coated tablets commercially available (Karsivan). It has been approved in many countries since 1986. This article refers to its use in dogs.

Structure and properties

Propentofylline (C15H22N4O3, Mr = 306.4 g/mol) is a xanthine derivative.

Effects

Propentofylline (ATCvet QC04AD90) is blood flow-promoting in the microcirculation and indirectly platelet aggregation-inhibiting, promoting blood flow properties.

Indications

For the treatment of geriatric disorders in dogs (central and peripheral circulatory disorders). Investigations are underway to determine whether propentofylline can be used to treat dementia and Alzheimer’s disease in humans. However, the drug has not yet been approved for this purpose.

Dosage

According to the drug label. Tablets are given twice daily with or without food.

Contraindications

Propentofylline is contraindicated in hypersensitivity and in pregnant bitches. Refer to the drug label for complete precautions.

Interactions

Interactions with other drugs are not known.

Adverse effects

Possible adverse effects include allergic skin reactions such as hives.
