Prophylaxis and costs

The costs of surgery for a collarbone fracture are made up of various factors. In addition to the cost of materials used, such as screws, plates, sutures, surgical clothing, surgeons’ salaries, etc., the costs of anesthesia, anesthesiologists and the nursing staff on the ward must also be taken into account. All in all, the costs are in the 4-digit range.

In addition, a bandage or a sling as well as the necessary physiotherapy after the operation are included. Since in most cases it is an accident, the costs for the operation and hospital stay are covered by accident insurance. A first Gilchrist or backpack bandage for at home can be obtained at the clinic.

If you would like to have a second one to change, you have to pay for it yourself. In the pharmacy the costs for this are about 70 €. If you break your collarbone while abroad, you may have to pay a lot more if you do not have international health insurance.

In order to avoid surgery for a collarbone fracture, you should always wear adequate protective clothing during sports. However, the most important thing is to assess your own ability correctly and not to take any reckless actions. Of course, the probability of a complicated fracture can only be reduced and cannot be avoided, since a collarbone fracture is an accident.
