Prophylaxis | Birthmark

Prophylaxis

Since an intensive UV irradiation promotes the degeneration of harmless birthmarks, it should be avoided to stay excessively long and often in the sun. Especially sunburns suffered in childhood promote and increase the risk of developing a malignant melanoma. Moles should be observed in any case. Not only color and structural changes but also itchy skin can be an indication of the development of melanoma.Light-skinned people should be particularly careful about exposure to the sun. Caution should also be exercised if relatives have already had altered marks.

Summary

The birthmark is the most common benign tumor of the skin. Moles are already present at birth. Moles on the other hand are acquired.

Removal is only rarely necessary. Above all, the birthmarks should be observed by the patients and the changes should be reported to the doctor, as it can be a precursor of a malignant melanoma (malignant skin cancer). The risk of developing skin cancer (e.g. melanoma) at a later stage is increased by frequent severe sunburns.
