Prophylaxis

The most important measure to prevent cracked hands is to protect them from external influences. For example, the hands should be protected against the cold and therefore covered with gloves in autumn and winter. Greasy creams should also be used more in winter to protect the skin from the cold air.

Exposure to the sun can also lead to chapped hands, so hands should be protected with sunscreen. A simple measure to prevent chapped hands is to increase the daily fluid intake. The skin needs not only fat, but also sufficient fluid, which can be achieved by increasing the amount of fluid you drink.

Body care and cleansing should be carried out carefully. Mild soaps and lukewarm water are recommended, as well as moisturizing and non-perfumed hygiene and care products. Over the years, the skin loses more and more moisture and fat, which is why it is particularly useful in old age to use rich creams, for example with the addition of urea.

Urea also reduces the feeling of tension in cracked hands and soothes itching. It can be useful to lay out hand care products wherever the hands are washed so that the care is applied regularly and evenly throughout the day. Natural household remedies can also be used for chapped hands.

Creaming the hands with evening primrose or olive oil or a five to seven minute bath in lukewarm water with a few drops of oil can give the skin sufficient oil and moisture. The skin on the hands should also be protected as well as possible from external influences when working in the garden, at home or at work. Wearing gloves is a simple but important step to maintain the protective function of the skin and prevent chapped hands.

In some cases, direct contact with latex or plastic in gloves is not tolerated or is perceived as unpleasant (latex allergy). In these cases, cotton gloves can be worn under waterproof gloves, which absorb the sweat produced and prevent the skin from swelling. In principle, the skin is also positively influenced by a healthy lifestyle. Regular physical exercise, healthy and balanced nutrition as well as relaxation and stress reduction have a positive effect on the whole body, but also on the skin texture and chapped hands.
