Prophylaxis | Lupus erythematosus

Prophylaxis

Since systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease, there are no preventive measures. Once a person is affected by lupus, regular check-ups by a physician are recommended. Special attention is paid to the best individual therapy and attempts are made to keep the side effects as low as possible. To avoid relapses, however, a few small rules can be observed:

  • Patients suffering from the so-called Raynaud’s syndrome (Raynaud’s disease) should avoid cold and always wear gloves or take other precautions against the cold.

Prognosis

Lupus erythematosus is a disease that is still incurable today. However, the treatment options are advancing all the time. The sooner treatment is started, the better the course should be.SLE has a fairly good prognosis.

Compared to previous years, the prognosis has improved significantly. The 10-year survival rate is now 90%. The most common cause of death is heart attack or blood poisoning. The diagnosis of lupus is not yet a reason to start a drug therapy. It must be decided in each individual case.
