Prophylaxis | Optic nerve inflammation in multiple sclerosis

Prophylaxis

So far it is not possible to give a recommendation for prophylaxis of optic nerve inflammation in multiple sclerosis. It is not possible to predict the duration and severity of the relapse, nor to discuss the triggers responsible for the relapse. It is possible that in the future, new therapies such as EPO treatment may at least partially prevent the progression of optic neuritis in multiple sclerosis.

The risk of developing optic neuritis in the course of multiple sclerosis is relatively high. Thus, about 20% of patients suffer from optic neuritis during the course of the disease. If there are many and long optic nerve inflammations, the risk of going blind is increased during the course of the disease.
