Prophylaxis/Prevention

There is no special vaccination to prevent brucellosis in humans. Therefore, the prevention of transmission plays an important role. In Germany, all animals are officially brucellosis-free according to the so-called Brucellosis Ordinance.

However, this does not apply to many other countries (especially in the Mediterranean region). Therefore, the consumption of raw meat or non-pasteurised milk and raw milk products should be avoided. Contact with potentially infectious animals should also be avoided in endemic areas.

People who work a lot with animals should take appropriate hygiene measures such as gloves, protective clothing and careful hand disinfection. Mothers suffering from brucellosis should not primarily breastfeed; however, after boiling their milk, they may pass it on to the infant.
