Pseudoallergy: Therapy

General measures

  • If there is an intolerance to excipients in medicines, a change of preparation should be made.
  • Limited alcohol consumption (men: max. 25 g alcohol per day; women: max. 12 g alcohol per day) – alcohol increases the absorption (uptake) of histamine.
  • Review of permanent medication due topossible effect on the existing disease.

Nutritional medicine

  • Nutritional counseling based on nutritional analysis
  • Observance of the following specific nutritional recommendations:
    • Individual diet, strictly avoiding the allergens or the corresponding foods, respectively.
    • The following factors can trigger a pseudoallergy:
      • Foods with high levels of aroma and flavor compounds that occur naturally in foods.
      • Foods that lead to increased histamine release, such as strawberries, chocolate, citrus fruits, tomatoes.
      • Food additives or naturally occurring food ingredients in food, such as preservatives (benzoates – p-hydroxybenzoic acid, sorbic acid, PHB esters, propionic acid, nitrite, sulfur dioxide, metasulfites), dyes or azo dyes (tartrazine, Quinoline yellow, erythrosine, yellow orange S, patent blue, amaranth, indigotin, cochineal red), flavor enhancers (glutamate / glutamic acid), sweeteners (aspartame – aspartylphenylalanine methyl ester) and flavorings, antioxidants and salicylates (salicylic acid).
      • Pesticide residues
      • Components of medicines (the azo dye tartrazine (E 102) and yellow orange S (E 110) is often added to various medicines, including anti-allergic drugs)!!!
      • Other dyes in drugs with allergy risk are: Quinoline Yellow (E 104), True Yellow (E 105) and Ponceau 4R (E 124)!
    • If the substance causing the pseudoallergy has not yet been identified or can not be completely avoided, the following general diet is recommended avoiding:
      • Finished food products containing numerous food additives.
      • Raw foods and foods heated only fleetingly
      • Fruit salads, fruit juices and exotic fruits.
      • Alcoholic beverages
      • Cold and voluminous meals
  • Selection of appropriate food based on the nutritional analysis
  • See also under “Therapy with micronutrients (vital substances)” – if necessary, taking a suitable dietary supplement.

Training

  • Patients with pseudoallergy need to be very aware of and able to interpret food compositions. Training in this area is helpful.
