Pubic Bone Inflammation (Symphysitis): Causes

Pathogenesis (development of disease)

The cause of symphysitis is recurrent (repetitive) microtrauma due to misuse or overuse. In this case, permanently high antagonistic (“opposing”) muscle forces, namely abdominal muscles (abdominals) versus adductors (group of skeletal muscles that belong to the pulling (adduction) of a limb), act on the tendinous and periosteal (periosteal) attachments to symphysis (pubic symphysis) and pubic branches. This ultimately leads to irritation or inflammation.

Etiology (causes)

Biographic Causes Causes

  • Athletes – sports with sprinting and kicking elements or rapid changes in direction (including American soccer, basketball, soccer, tennis, and running sports)

Disease-related causes

  • Adductor strains
  • Pelvic obliquity, unilateral
  • Muscular imbalances between trunk and adductor muscles → increased load on the symphysis region.
