Pulling in the back while bending

Physiologically, the entire spine curves forward when bending down. During each bending process, the vertebral bodies press against each other in the curvature at the front, while they tend to diverge at the back. In the long run, this leads to a pressure load on the intervertebral disc.

If this bending is supplemented by additional weights, for example by lifting an object while bending down, the pressure on the intervertebral discs also increases. If these are overstressed over time, this is noticeable in the form of back pain. With such pain, it is particularly helpful to relieve the back prophylactically.

You should avoid bending forward a lot, as well as lifting objects when your back is bent. It is recommended to always lift loads from the knees. If the intervertebral disc is too heavily loaded, this can be very dangerous.

In the long run it comes to a so-called “disc prolapse”, which can be the preliminary stage of a herniated disc.Slipped discs are not uncommon, even in young adults, and in addition to severe pain can be very dangerous. Immediate treatment with an orthopedic surgeon is necessary. If you suspect a herniated disc as the cause of your pulling back, we recommend: Symptoms of a herniated disc

Therapy

When pulling in the back, several factors must be considered in the therapeutic approach. On the one hand, one must fight the causes of the pain, on the other hand, the focus should be on rapid pain relief, so that the body does not adopt an unphysiological relieving posture to which it has become accustomed. Since the problems are often muscular in nature, a sporty build-up of the back muscles, pain relief through heat, targeted physiotherapy, acupuncture, a relaxing massage or pain medication can help.

If a herniated disc is present, a doctor should always approve and initiate the therapy. In the case of a herniated disc, a conservative therapy is sufficient in many cases. Here one tries mainly to alleviate the pain and to maintain the ability to move through specific physiotherapy.

Slipped discs are still operated by many doctors in Germany, although it would often not be necessary. During an operation, the tissue that has leaked and caused the pain is removed and, if necessary, the adjacent vertebral bodies are stiffened by screwing them together, with loss of mobility. Pregnant women who suffer from pulling back pain can be recommended gentle sports to strengthen the muscles. It already helps a lot if the affected women consciously adopt a straight posture.
