Pulling in the back

Introduction

A pulling in the back is a generally very common symptom. Almost everyone has felt such a pulling from adolescence on and it should not give immediate cause for concern. Often the pain subsides by itself and does not require treatment.

Depending on the intensity and duration of the pain, it may be advisable to have the causes clarified by a doctor, preferably an orthopaedic surgeon. Possible reasons for pulling in the back can be overstrain or tension of the muscles, which can be caused by incorrect strain, sports, pregnancy or similar. Theoretically, organs of the chest or abdominal area, for example the kidneys, can also have an influence on back pain.

Drag on the right side of the back

If the pulling in the back is predominantly on only one side, it is obvious that due to an asymmetrical incorrect loading, part of the loaded back muscles is tensed or strained. In this case there is an imbalance that causes pain on the one hand, but on the other hand, there is a risk that the patient will adopt a relieving posture. Every now and then, the feeling that arises from a bad posture is also perceived as a burning sensation in the back.

Regardless of how the pain is felt, the subsequent relieving posture puts a permanent strain on the back and can increase the problems and pain in the long term. Pulling in the back when it occurs on only one side can also be symptomatic of a painful disease of the kidney, an inflammation of the renal pelvis. In the case of unilateral back pain, it can also be a herniated disc.

In this case the fibrous part of the intervertebral disc tears and the inner substance of the disc can come out and protrude in one direction. If this gelatinous mass protrudes in only one direction, it can cause unilateral pain. All causes that can be considered for a general pulling in the back can also cause pain on only one side, such as the entrapment of a nerve in the back or overstraining of the back muscles due to secondary causes, such as pregnancy, incorrect bending or heavy lifting.
