Products
Pyriproxifen is commercially available as a spot-on solution for cats. Medicines for dogs are approved in many countries but are not currently available.
Structure and properties
Pyriproxifen (C20H19NO3, Mr = 321.4 g/mol) is a pyridine derivative derived from fenoxycarb.
Effects
Pyriproxifen (ATCvet QP53AX23) inhibits the development of flea eggs and larvae for 3 months by mimicking the action of the juvenile hormone. It belongs to the so-called insect-growth regulators. Because pyriproxifen does not kill adult fleas, it is also combined with insecticides such as permethrin.

There are no contraindications listed. Full precautions can be found in the drug label.
Adverse effects
Possible adverse effects include local skin reactions such as redness and itching.
