Recipes for cough syrup

General information

A cough syrup (antitussive) is a medicine that suppresses or dampens the irritation of the cough. Usually the basis for a cough syrup is a simple syrup (Syrupus Simplex, purified water and household sugar) or an alcoholic solution. There are many different brands and manufacturers from which you can buy cough syrups in pharmacies and sometimes also in drugstores. In addition, there is also the possibility of simply making your own cough syrup. Below are some recipes.

Recipe 1

For this, several lemons are peeled and then cut into thin slices. These are then placed layer by layer in a bowl and each layer is individually sprinkled thickly with sugar. This is then left to stand for 12 – 14 hours and then 3x/day 1 tablespoon each of the pulp, juice and sugar. The rest is kept in the refrigerator.

Recipe 2

In the pharmacy you can buy dried Icelandic moss. Take two heaped teaspoons of it, pour cold water over it, bring it to boil and strain it. Drink 2-3 cups of this brew lukewarm daily and sweeten with honey if necessary.

Recipe 3

The winter vegetables black radish is halved and hollowed out. Then fill both halves with natural honey and let it stand for 12 hours. Take 1 tablespoon of the resulting juice daily before meals and keep the rest of the cough syrup in the refrigerator.

Recipe 4

Bring a handful of thyme, peppermint, sage and ribwort plantain to the boil in one liter of water, strain and drink it sweetened with a lot of honey in sips throughout the day (always warm it up so that it is drunk lukewarm).

Recipe 5

Chop 100 g onion very finely, then add 100 g rock candy and bring to the boil until the sugar has dissolved. Strain the resulting brew carefully and take 3 tbsp/day. Keep the rest in the refrigerator.

Recipe 6

Cut a large juicy onion into thin slices and place in a bowl. Then sprinkle the onion slices with a thick layer of sugar (2 cm thick) and place in the oven at 50 degrees for 5 hours. The sugar is liquefied by the onion juice and absorbs the onion’s antibacterial agents. Take 1 tablespoon every 2 hours until the cough gets better.
