Reduce Fever: But How?

Even though fever is a healthy reaction of the body, sometimes it needs to be lowered. What is the best way to do this? As a rule, fever supports the work of the immune system in the fight against pathogens. Therefore, the principle is that it should be fought only when the temperature values rise threateningly.

At what point is a fever dangerous?

Slightly elevated temperatures over one to two days are generally considered harmless. However, if the temperature rises above 39 degrees Celsius or does not drop after two days, you should see a doctor – especially if other signs of illness are added.

Some doctors are of the opinion that a high fever must be brought down. An opinion that is justified in that the nerve cells are relatively sensitive to heat and brain damage can occur as a result of high temperatures.

Often also a question of age

Experts who deal with fever in detail, however, see the matter more differentiated, namely age-dependent: Children and young people can sometimes cope with a bout of fever that reaches 41 degrees Celsius for a short time. This is a strain that the body of an elderly person or a chronically ill person certainly cannot cope with so easily.

Up to 41 degrees Celsius, fever is unpleasant but, according to the German Drug Commission, harmless. However, the prerequisite is that the body is not already weakened by other diseases.

Bed rest for fever

Among the proven home remedies, bed rest is in first place. This protects the circulation, helps to save energies and use them to fight off the disease.

What’s more, it’s helpful:

  • Adequate supply of fresh air
  • Room temperature between 18 and 20 degrees
  • Light cotton clothing and a light blanket prevent heat accumulation
  • Refrain from heavy food

Drinking plenty of fluids is essential in fever, because a feverish body loses large amounts of water through sweating. Proven in fever are clear broths, which provide the body with sufficient minerals. As a rule of thumb, for every degree Celsius above 37 per day, drink an extra half to a full liter of fluid.
