Rehabilitation after installation of a hip prosthesis

Why rehabilitation makes sense

The use of a hip prosthesis is a major surgery in which the manipulation of the soft tissues and the use of the prosthesis results in major soft tissue impairment. This and also the pain after the operation, which is of course treated with medication, makes the patient feel insecure and he or she must learn to deal with the situation. These psychological aspects are effectively taken care of by the movement therapy and also the guidance of the personnel during the rehabilitation (Reha). Beyond that the Reha possesses important physical aspects, which serve the mobility preservation and the strength training. Also certain measures and rules are practiced, which are useful during the first year after surgery.

What forms of rehabilitation are there?

There are two concepts for the implementation of rehabilitation. On the one hand there is the outpatient rehabilitation and on the other hand the inpatient rehabilitation. The outpatient rehabilitation takes place in a rehabilitation center or a rehabilitation clinic near the patient’s place of residence, where the patient spends 4-6 hours a day in the facility and is treated by doctors and therapists during this time.

After completing the daily program, the patient can go home and spend his free time there and stay overnight. This is only possible if the patient is healthy and able to work under pressure to such an extent that inpatient admission and day-night availability of staff is unnecessary. In addition, the daily arrival and departure must be within reasonable limits, also for the condition of the patient.

The stationary Reha however takes place likewise in a Reha center or a Reha clinic, whereby here the concerning experiences both during the day the measures, and at night in the hospital or in the center stays overnight. This concept is similar to a hospital stay with rehabilitative measures. The inpatient variant is indicated if the person concerned is seriously ill and requires permanent availability of personnel or if, for example, coping with the situation from home does not seem promising.
