Remove caries yourself

Almost all people are confronted with caries at some point in their lives. Sometimes more or less severely, it nevertheless often goes unnoticed by those affected. In some cases, the caries can spread, which can lead to damage of the tooth and the entire periodontium.

Even though prosthetics is already very advanced nowadays, a dental prosthesis should be avoided as long as possible and the natural tooth should be preserved. This requires the removal of the caries to catch it early and fill the hole with a filling. However, many people underestimate caries and even going to the dentist is already a deterrent for many people, which is associated with discomfort and pain.

For this reason, one can often find tips and tricks on how to remove caries by oneself, especially on the Internet. In a certain small area this is correct, but only if it is a small initial caries, a preliminary stage of real caries. This decalcification of the tooth is noticeable as white spots on the tooth, which can hardly be recognized by a layman.

These decalcifications can be controlled with fluoride preparations (fluoridation of the teeth), so that the “caries” can be treated quasi from home. However, the use of these preparations should always be discussed with a dentist, as they should not be overdosed in order to avoid unsightly discoloration. In most cases it is recommended to use them once a week.

Any other type of caries that goes beyond this stage, possibly even has already reached the depth of the dentine, cannot be treated by yourself but requires treatment by a dentist. First of all, it is not possible for a layman to diagnose the caries exactly and to assess its extent. This requires experience and a trained eye.

Dental caries can appear in many different places that cannot be detected with a mirror that you just put in your mouth. For further examination, special instruments are necessary, which must be used carefully, for example, not to “poke” in the caries and endanger aggravation by pulp opening etc. Under no circumstances should one “poke” the caries with a probe or other pointed object.

To remove the caries you need a drill and also for further treatment different filling material. Only the dentist can ensure a complete and safe removal with the necessary equipment in his practice with subsequent filling. Self-experiments endanger the dental health and can make the situation worse.

However, what should be done at home and by each patient to prevent tooth decay is thorough dental care and a healthy diet. Teeth should be brushed at least twice a day to remove plaque. In addition, mouthwashes, tongue scrapers and dental floss can be used to catch even difficult areas of the tooth.

Regular check-ups by the dentist and professional tooth cleaning, which should be done about twice a year, can significantly reduce the risk of deeper caries. Only use foods containing sugar and acids in small amounts, as they attack the tooth and actively influence the development of caries. Household remedies such as drinking green tea or using alkaline foods are supposed to counteract the development of caries. In the meantime, research is being conducted on many different methods that should make it possible to remove caries at the dentist without drilling.
