Remove coating of the tongue with a mouthrinse

The range of mouthwashes on the market is very extensive. In general, a distinction can be made between a cosmetic mouthwash and a medical mouthwash. The latter is pharmacy-bound and is mostly used after operations in the oral cavity, in case of periodontitis or gum inflammation.

Cosmetic mouthwashes are suitable to avoid bad breath, to enhance oral hygiene and as a supplement to daily dental care. For further treatment of plaque on the tongue, the use of a mouthrinse can be very useful. Many of the mouthrinses have antibacterial ingredients and can therefore act against the deposited bacteria on the tongue.

Furthermore, it can also be useful to make a mouthrinse yourself with household remedies such as baking powder or salt. In general, however, the mechanical removal of plaque is considered more effective than mouthwashes. A combination of both is highly recommended.

How do I reach the back of the tongue?

The rear and rough part of the tongue is particularly susceptible to the coatings on the back of the tongue. This is where over 60 percent of the acid-producing bacteria settle, which ultimately cause the unpleasant bad breath. The best way to reach this rear part of the back of the tongue is with a special tongue scraper.

The use of this should be a part of daily oral hygiene to permanently prevent a plaque. These tongue cleaners are available in every drugstore. You can also gargle with household remedies such as baking powder diluted in water or table salt.

How can I remove deposits on the tongue caused by smoking?

With smokers, a light yellowish to brownish coating of the tongue occurs above all. It is caused by nicotine residues that are deposited on the tongue. It is often difficult to remove.

First of all you should try to stop smoking. Only a complete renunciation of nicotine can prevent the deposits in the long run. Furthermore, even if you do not quit smoking, extensive oral and especially tongue hygiene is recommended. A special tongue scraper with which the tongue should be cleaned daily after brushing the teeth is suitable for this. In addition, one should drink a lot of water to clean tongue and body.
