Renal Cell Carcinoma (Hypernephroma): Examination

A comprehensive clinical examination is the basis for selecting further diagnostic steps:

  • General physical examination – including blood pressure, pulse, body temperature, body weight, body height; furthermore:
    • Inspection (viewing) of the skin and mucous membranes.
    • Inspection and palpation (palpation)
      • Lymph node stations (cervical, axillary, supraclavicular, inguinal).
      • Spine
      • Mammae (mammary glands) [due topossible paraneoplastic symptoms: Galactorrhea (abnormal breast milk discharge)]
    • Auscultation (listening) of the heart.
    • Auscultation of the lungs
    • Palpation of the renal bed [flank pain; palpable swelling in the renal bed].
    • Palpation of the abdomen (belly) (tenderness?, knocking pain?, coughing pain?, guarding tension?, hernial orifices?)
    • Inspection of the genitals [man: varicocele (“varicose vein hernia”) – can occur acutely on the left side].
  • Health check (as an additional follow-up measure).

Square brackets [ ] indicate possible pathological (pathological) physical findings.
