A comprehensive clinical examination is the basis for selecting further diagnostic steps:
- General physical examination – including blood pressure, pulse, body temperature, body weight, body height; furthermore:
- Inspection (viewing) of the skin and mucous membranes.
- Inspection and palpation (palpation)
- Lymph node stations (cervical, axillary, supraclavicular, inguinal).
- Spine
- Mammae (mammary glands) [due topossible paraneoplastic symptoms: Galactorrhea (abnormal breast milk discharge)]
- Auscultation (listening) of the heart.
- Auscultation of the lungs
- Palpation of the renal bed [flank pain; palpable swelling in the renal bed].
- Palpation of the abdomen (belly) (tenderness?, knocking pain?, coughing pain?, guarding tension?, hernial orifices?)
- Inspection of the genitals [man: varicocele (“varicose vein hernia”) – can occur acutely on the left side].
- Health check (as an additional follow-up measure).
