Resources

In addition to active physiotherapy, various aids can be used to treat spinal canal stenosis in the cervical spine.

  • One method that is helpful in everyday life is the application of tapes. On the one hand, they have a stabilizing effect on posture, and on the other hand they relieve and relax the muscle chains to which they are applied.

Tapes last about a week and thus support the time between therapy sessions.

  • On the other hand, pain-relieving and relaxing creams can be applied with light massage strokes. They stimulate the blood circulation in the tissue and the muscles.
  • The use of electrotherapy is also helpful for this purpose. Currents relieve pain, promote metabolism by increasing blood circulation and also have a relaxing effect on muscle structures.
  • At home, neck pillows can help by stretching the neck and creating space when sitting or lying down.
  • So-called blackrolls or fascial rollers are suitable for self-massage. There are different sizes, adapted for different regions of the body. Tennis balls can also be used to loosen the neck muscles, which loosen slightly circular tense points in the muscle on the right and left side of the spine.

Duration of the therapy

The healing time and thus the duration of therapy for spinal canal stenosis of the cervical spine is very individual. Healing of injuries in the body depends on many factors, including of course the severity of the injury, the general state of health, age and also the cooperation and observance of rest periods on the part of the patient. A slight stenosis can improve after only days after manual therapy and loosening measures.

Severe stenoses with massive complaints can last for weeks or months until absolute freedom from symptoms is achieved. However, a steady improvement can be expected in the course of therapy. Pain is reduced quite quickly, but goals such as complete freedom of movement, building up strength and posture, as well as the relief of radiating nerve complaints are more protracted.
