Respiratory Acidosis: Symptoms, Complaints, Signs

The following symptoms and complaints may indicate respiratory (breathing-related) acidosis:

  • Central cyanosis-blue discoloration of the skin and central mucous membranes/tongue due to lack of oxygen in the blood.
  • Dyspnea – difficult breathing, feeling of shortness of breath.
  • Tachycardia – heartbeat too fast: > 100 beats per minute.
  • Pulmonary hypertensionhigh blood pressure caused by the lungs.
  • Facial flushing
  • Conjunctival injection – bright red blood vessels in the conjunctiva.
  • Papilledema (swelling (edema) at the junction of the optic nerve with the retina, which manifests as protrusion of the optic disc; congestive papilledema i. R. bilaterally).
  • Disturbances of consciousness
  • Confusion
  • CO2 narcosis
