Restless Leg Syndrome | Twitching in sleep

Restless Leg Syndrome

In restless legs syndrome, patients complain of agonizing sensations in the lower legs, which can lead to difficulties in falling and staying asleep. The symptoms of restless legs syndrome occur primarily in the evening, at rest, when lying down and sometimes also during rest periods during the day.

Periodic movements during sleep

The periodic movement disorders of the limbs during sleep are irregular, involuntary movements of the arms and legs (twitching). Often they are accompanied by non-restorative sleep, with symptoms of a difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep, reduced sleep restfulness, pronounced daytime tiredness, monotonic intolerance, secondary depressive symptoms and memory and attention disorders.

Nightly calf cramps

The nocturnal calf cramps are spontaneously occurring calf cramps, usually from sleep without a sign. These nocturnal calf cramps are very painful and can last several minutes. The regression usually occurs spontaneously or through massage, movement (targeted stretching) or heat application. The calves or foot muscles are often affected, less frequently other muscle groups.

Sleep-related teeth grinding (bruxism)

Nocturnal teeth grinding (bruxism) activates the chewing muscles, which results in teeth grinding and increased wear and tear. This can lead to pain in the area of the teeth and the chewing muscles.

Sleep-related rhythmic movement disorders

Sleep-related rhythmic movement disorders are repeated, monotonous, rhythmic movements. They occur more frequently when falling asleep and during sleep. Frequent movements are head-throwing from front to back, head rolling from right to left, body rocking in elbow-knee position and body rolling in prone position.
