Retinal Examination with Retinal Vessel Analyzer

The Retinal Vessel Analyzer (RVA) is used in ophthalmology for diagnostic purposes. This examination method can be used to examine the vessel width of the large retinal vessels (retinal vessels).

Indications (areas of application)

  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Diabetes mellitus (diabetes)
  • Obesity (overweight)
  • Smoking
  • Stress
  • Lack of exercise
  • Hypercholesterolemia (elevated cholesterol levels)
  • Malnutrition
  • Apoplexy (stroke) or myocardial infarction (heart attack) in the family history.

The procedure

The procedure involves painlessly taking an image of the back of the eye in a short period of time. From this, a special computerized image analysis program can extract and accurately measure the largest retinal vessels (retinal vasculature). This makes it relatively easy to visualize damage to the microcirculation of blood in the eye. The microvessels of the back of the eye show the condition of the microvessels of your entire body (brain, heart, kidney). The finest vascular changes can thus be made visible in the early stages. This allows further preventive measures or therapeutic measures to be initiated in good time, if necessary.

The Retinal Vessel Analyzer is a non-stressful diagnostic procedure that can provide important information in cases of visual disorders.
