Risks of lymph drainage during pregnancy

Lymphatic drainage as such does not in itself present any risks when performed on a person who has no contraindication for this method. It is a very gentle method of treatment, even during pregnancy, which does not cause any discomfort. However, there are diseases for which lymph drainage must not be performed.

In these cases risks can arise. An important risk is the flushing out of germs in the event of an acute infection or inflammation in the tissue. This is particularly dangerous for pregnant women, since not only their own well-being is at risk, but also that of the child. There is also the danger that blood clots, so-called thrombi, will come loose and the bloodstream will be washed out through lymph drainage on the legs.

This can lead to a life-threatening pulmonary embolism. However, this risk is only real if leg vein thrombosis is known to occur in the pregnant woman or the risk of such thrombosis is greatly increased. In addition, lymph drainage can be a strain on the heart if there is a weakness of the heart (cardiac insufficiency).

During pregnancy, lymphatic drainage in the abdomen and pelvis area is risky and must therefore not be performed. This can endanger the existing pregnancy. Before a lymphatic drainage is performed during pregnancy, potential risks that may occur in the context of certain pre-existing conditions must therefore be clarified.

Contraindications for lymph drainage during pregnancy

Although lymphatic drainage is a very gentle treatment option, there are contraindications for this therapy option. Especially during pregnancy, these contraindications must be strictly adhered to in order to protect the welfare of the mother and the child. Depending on the body region, a distinction is made between different contraindications.

In the area of the legs, lymphatic drainage must not be performed during pregnancy if there is a risk of thrombosis, acute infectious inflammation or heart failure. Lymphatic drainage of the abdomen and pelvis is always contraindicated during pregnancy – regardless of any previous illnesses. Lymphatic drainage of the neck must not be performed in cases of hyperthyroidism or cardiac arrhythmia.
