Risks of surgery | Inner labia larger than outer – What can you do?

Risks of surgery

In principle, no damage is to be expected if the procedure is performed correctly. Nevertheless, every surgical intervention is of course associated with risks. The following complications can occur:

  • Bleeding, swelling and hematomas
  • Injuries to neighboring structures, especially nerves and thus sensitivity disorders
  • Infections, especially since the surgical site is primarily colonized by bacteria
  • A too generous removal of the labia with not taking into account the scar shrinkage
  • Permanent impairments, especially during sexual intercourse, e.g. persistent scar problems such as feelings of tension and pain

What results can be expected?

In general, before an operation, one should discuss with the treating doctor what is possible and what is not possible with the operation. In this way you can express your wishes and ideas and at the same time you run less risk of being disappointed after the operation. Clearly, the goal of labia reduction surgery is to remove the excess tissue, thus meeting the patient’s aesthetic demands and alleviating any pain she may experience. At the same time, it must be mentioned that the labia minora cannot be reduced at will, as it protects the inner genital from pathogens.

When will the surgery be paid for by the health insurance company?

If there is a pronounced asymmetry of the labia or a strong mechanical irritation, you can apply to your health insurance company for reimbursement. If there is a high level of psychological distress, a psychological report must first be prepared so that an application for reimbursement can be made. In general, these applications are often not very promising, and health insurance companies are becoming increasingly restrictive in this area.
