Rosacea: Or something else? Differential Diagnosis

Respiratory System (J00-J99)

  • Unspecified paranasal sinus disease.

Blood, hematopoietic organs – immune system (D50-D90).

Skin and subcutaneous (L00-L99).

  • Acne (here: Acne papulopustulosa) (DD due toRosacea papulopustulosa).
  • Bromoderm – drug reaction to bromine preparations.
  • Gianotti-Crosti syndrome (synonyms: Acrodermatitis papulosa eruptiva infantilis, Infantile papular acrodermatitis) – disease believed to occur as a result of initial hepatitis B infection in children under ten years of age. Typical skin manifestations are episodic confluent reddish papules (nodular change on skin), preferably on the face, buttocks and extensor sides of the extremities with the exclusion of the crook of the arm and back of the knee.
  • Gram-negative or eosinophilic folliculitis (hair folliculitis) (DD due toRosacea papulopustulosa).
  • Iododerm – drug reaction to iodine preparations.
  • Conjunctivitis (conjunctivitis) of other genesis (bacterial, viral, etc.).
  • Contact dermatitis, allergic or toxic (DD due toRosacea papulopustulosa or rosacea erythematoteleangiectatica).
  • Lupoid perioral dermatitisskin inflammation of unknown origin, which is accompanied by papules and pustules (pustules) located centrally on the face.

Musculoskeletal system and connective tissue (M00-M99).

  • Dermatomyositis – idiopathic myopathy (muscle disease) or myositis (muscle inflammation) with skin involvement (derma); belongs to the group of collagenoses (DD due toRosacea erythematoteleangiectatica).
  • Lupus erythematosus chronicus discoides – autoimmune disease that can lead primarily to skin, but also to organ changes (DD due toRosacea erythematoteleangiectatica).

Neoplasms – tumor diseases (C00-D48).

  • Basal cell carcinoma (DD in glandular hyperplastic rosacea).
  • Eosinophilic granuloma – belongs to the group of Langerhans histiocytoses; was formerly also called histiocytosis X; the tumor cells are derived from Langhans cells; in this case, individual tumor-like, osteolytic lesions (“bone dissolutions”) develop, which occur preferentially in skull bones (especially petrous bone), mandible (lower jaw), spine, ribs and diaphyses (bone shaft) of long bones (DD in glandular-hyperplastic rosacea)
  • Polycythaemia vera (PV) – disease in which there is an increase in all three series of blood cells (especially erythrocytes, but also platelets (thrombocytes) and leukocytes/white blood cells) in the blood (DD due toRosacea erythematoteleangiectatica).

Psyche – Nervous System (F00-F99; G00-G99).

  • Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome – idiopathic inflammatory disorder associated with lip swelling and peripheral facial nerve palsy.
