- Rhinorrhea (runny nose).
Associated symptoms
- Blocked nose
- Fever
- Sneezing
Warning signs (red flags)
- Anamnestic information:
- State after traumatic brain injury (TBI) + occurrence of watery or bloody rhinorrhea → think of: cerebrospinal rhinorrhea.
- Chronic use of decongestant nasal drops → think of: Rhinitis medicamentosa (nasal congestion).
- Cocaine (→ damage to the nasal septum (nasal septum) and possibly its perforation (perforation)).
- Hemorrhagic rhinorrhea (especially with unilateral nasal congestion) → think of: malignant neoplasm, cocaine abuse.
- Infants + unilateral fetid (malodorous) rhinorrhea → think of: Foreign body in the nose
- Cephalgia (headache) + fever + purulent rhinorrhea → think: acute sinusitis (sinusitis).
