Sarecycline was approved in the United States in 2018 in tablet form (Seysara).
Structure and properties
Sarecycline (C24H29N3O8, Mr = 487.5 g/mol) is structurally related to other tetracyclines.
Effects
Sarecycline has antibacterial effects against and anti-inflammatory properties. Unlike other tetracyclines, it has a narrow spectrum of activity and therefore has a lesser negative effect on the bacteria of the intestinal flora. The effects are based on inhibition of bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S subunit of ribosomes.
Indications
For the treatment of the inflammatory lesions associated with nonnodular, moderate-to-severe acne vulgaris. Sarecycline is also being investigated for the treatment of rosacea.
Dosage
According to the SmPC. Tablets are taken once daily with sufficient water to avoid irritation of the esophagus. Excessive UV radiation should be avoided during treatment.

- Children under 9 years
- Treatment of infectious diseases
- Pregnancy, lactation

Adverse effects
The most common adverse effect is nausea. Other possible side effects include:
- Diarrhea
- Drowsiness, dizziness
- Increased intracranial pressure
- Increased sensitivity to sunlight or UV radiation.
