Saw Palmetto: Effect and Side Effects

In the development of prostatic hyperplasia, the enzymatic conversion of the hormone testosterone into dihydrotestosterone plays a central role. Experiments have shown that the enzyme that catalyzes this reaction can be inhibited by alcoholic extracts of saw palmetto fruit.

Furthermore, the fruit has decongestant and anti-inflammatory effects. All this leads to reduced pressure on the urethra and thus to reduced urination and improvement of symptoms.

In rare cases, stomach discomfort occurs when taking extracts of saw palmetto fruit. Interactions with other substances and contraindications are currently not known.
