Scarlet treatment

Introduction

Scarlet fever is a disease caused by an infection with streptococci, a type of bacteria. Typical symptoms are high fever, aching limbs, sore throat, swollen tonsils and headaches. Characteristically, a raspberry tongue (shiny red) and a rash with perioral pallor, i.e. a rash that spares the mouth, develop. The treatment consists of the administration of antibiotics and the additional therapy of the symptoms with antipyretic and analgesic agents. The main aim of the therapy is to prevent serious complications.

These antibiotics are used

The primary antibiotic used for scarlet fever is penicillin V. This can be given in tablet form. If you are allergic to penicillin, other antibiotics such as erythromycin or clarithromycin can be used. About three days after starting the antibiotic therapy you are usually no longer contagious, but the therapy should be continued for ten days.

Because of the serious complications scarlet fever brings with it, the disease is always treated with antibiotics. The most suitable antibiotic against scarlet fever is penicillin, which has been known for a very long time. There are now various sub-classifications of this antibiotic, usually penicillin V is used. As there are many allergies, especially to penicillin, the use of other drugs is often appropriate. So-called macrolide antibiotics are usually used for this purpose.

Treatment without antibiotics

The treatment of scarlet salmon without antibiotics is usually aimed at strengthening the body’s individual defences so that it can defend itself against the disease independently. This includes, for example, calf compresses for fever. These can also reduce the body temperature, as can antipyretic agents.

However, they do not suppress the fever but only help the body to lower the temperature more quickly at the right moment. Teas are best for sore throats caused by scarlet fever. First of all, they ensure that affected persons drink enough fluids.

This is particularly important in the case of fever, so that the body does not dry out. This is the only way to be strong enough to fight the infection. Secondly, the ingredients of the teas often contain anti-inflammatory and at the same time antibacterial substances.

Ginger, nettle, lemon or sage tea can be used for this purpose. To additionally relieve sore throats, a spoon of honey can be added to the tea. Throat sweets can also contain these ingredients.

Sage pastilles or Icelandic moss are particularly suitable. Nasturtium can also be taken against the bacteria. Due to the dangerous complications that can occur with scarlet fever, antibiotic therapy is absolutely recommended despite good other treatment options.
