Schistosomiasis: Medical History

Medical history (history of illness) represents an important component in the diagnosis of schistosomiasis (bilharzia).

Family history

  • What is the general health status of your relatives?

Social history

  • What is your profession?
  • Do you frequently travel abroad? If so, where exactly?

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • Did you have any contact with inland waters during your vacation?
  • Did you experience any skin symptoms after contact with inland waters?
    • Itching?
    • Hives (wheals of the skin/mucous membrane)?
  • Do you have the following other complaints:
    • Fever, chills?
    • Headache?
    • Cough?
    • Water retention?
    • Diarrhea with intermittence?
    • Abdominal pain?
    • Bleeding from the rectum?
    • Fatigue?
    • Pain when urinating?
    • Blood in the urine?
  • How long have these changes existed?

Vegetative anamnesis including nutritional anamnesis.

  • Have you unintentionally lost body weight?

Self history including medication history.
