Schuessler Salts: Effect and Application

Regulate minerals in the body and thus treat diseases – that is the claim of the Schuessler salts. They are also suitable for self-treatment. For almost 150 years, the Schüßler salts are part of alternative medicine. After initial experiences with homeopathy, the Oldenburg physician Dr. Heinrich Wilhelm Schüßler finally developed an independent form of treatment.

He called it “biochemistry”. The basic idea: in the case of disease symptoms, there is a distribution disorder of mineral salts in the body, which is to be rebalanced by taking these very salts.

Minerals in strong dilution

The treatment with Schuessler salts has nothing to do with a dietary supplement, in which one takes high concentrations of mineral salts such as magnesium, calcium or silicic acid, for example, as tablets. In the homeopathically dosed Schüßler salts, the respective inorganic minerals are contained only in strong dilution. The frequently used dilution D6, for example, stands for one part of the salt and one million parts of diluent.

Schüßler and his followers do not want to compensate for a nutritional salt deficiency in this way, but rather directly trigger processes in the body’s cells: These should thereby more easily absorb the right minerals in sufficient quantities. In this way, the function of the organs is supposed to be improved and the self-healing powers in the body are supposed to be stimulated.

12 basic salts and 12 supplements

Schüßler himself developed twelve basic salts (or functional remedies), and later added 12 more supplements. The salts have the advantage that they are relatively easy to use and therefore also well suited for self-treatment by the layman. They can also be used in children – side effects and interactions are not known.

Schüßler kept a list of how and when the mineral salts in question are best used from his experience. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of the Schüßler salts has not been proven in scientific studies. It draws, like many alternative healing methods, the proof of its effectiveness from practice.

Application of Schuessler salts

The small tasteless tablets can be melted in the mouth or drink them dissolved in hot water (do not mix with metal spoons!) in small sips, which are kept in the mouth as long as possible. In this way, the active ingredients should already pass into the blood via the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat.

Rule of thumb: In the case of acute symptoms, take one tablet every 10 to 15 minutes; after improvement, gradually increase the intervals up to a daily intake of 3 to 5 tablets – until the symptoms have disappeared.

On the same active ingredient basis there are also ointments, for example, for skin diseases or for bruises and joint diseases. The intake of several Schüßler salts is also common.

Schüßler salts for weight loss

If the organism is out of balance, absorbed nutrients can no longer be processed properly and metabolic products are deposited. The result: losing weight becomes more difficult.

However, Schüßler salts can boost the metabolism and thus help to lose weight. The following salts have proven particularly effective for losing weight:

  • No. 4: Potassium chloratum
  • No. 6: Kalium sulfuricum
  • No. 9: Natrium phosphoricum
  • No. 10: Natrium sulfuricum

The right combination to lose weight, however, shapes itself differently from person to person. A doctor or naturopath can help to find out which weight loss cure is best suited.

It should be noted, however, that with Schüßler salts alone the kilos do not tumble. Because it also needs regular exercise as well as a healthy diet.
