Seawater

Products

Seawater is commercially available in the form of nasal rinsing solutions and nasal sprays, among other products. As a rule, these are medical devices and not approved medicines. This article refers to nasal use.

Structure and properties

The products usually contain natural, purified (filtered), sterile seawater without chemical additives or preservatives. They may be iso- or hypertonic. Ingredients include various minerals and trace elements, such as sodium, chloride, sulfate, magnesium, calcium and potassium.

Effects

Sea water has moisturizing, decongestant, nourishing and cleansing properties. It removes mucus, crusts, dust, allergens and pathogens from the nasal cavity.

Fields of application

Areas of use include:

  • Hay fever, allergic rhinitis.
  • Rhinitis, stuffy nose
  • Sinusitis (inflammation of the sinuses)
  • Dry nasal mucosa, with nosebleeds.
  • For cleaning the nose
  • After nose surgery

Dosage

According to the instructions for use. The products do not contain active pharmaceutical ingredients and can therefore be applied several times a day as needed. Unlike decongestant nasal sprays, they are also suitable for long-term use. Sea water can also be used by pregnant and breastfeeding women.

Contraindications

The products are contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity. Not all products are suitable for infants and young children. Full precautions can be found in the Instructions for Use.

Adverse effects

Seawater is generally well tolerated and causes few adverse effects. Possible side effects of hypertonic solutions include local reactions such as tingling or mild irritation.
