Seborrheic Eczema: Symptoms, Complaints, Signs

The following symptoms and complaints may indicate seborrheic eczema:

  • Onset with area confluent erythema (redness of the skin) on the face (facial erythema).
  • Greasy scaling, yellow foci (pityriasiform, ie, under the clinical picture of pityriasis = appearance of fine, flour- or bran-shaped scales); on a reddened background (erythema).
  • Pruritus (itching) (rare; if present, then mainly in the area of the scalp).

Predilection sites (body regions where the disease occurs preferentially) [sebaceous gland-rich skin areas].

  • Face
    • Hairline
    • Eyebrows
    • Retroauricular region (“behind the ear)
    • Nasolabial folds (“noselip furrow”).
    • Between the lip and nose
  • Welding groove: anterior and posterior welding groove.

Note: Manifestation on the genital mucosa is possible.

Other notes

  • Notice: Unlike other eczema, an acute stage with vesicles and papulovesicles (mixture of papule (nodule-like change on the skin) and vesicle (vesicle: < 5 mm)) is absent.
  • In HIV infection usually occur severe courses.
  • If the eczema is generalized, it is called erythrodermia desquamativa.
