Products

Selamectin is commercially available as a solution (Stronghold). It has been approved in many countries since 2000.

Structure and properties

Selamectin (C43H63NO11, Mr = 769.96 g/mol) is a semisynthetic derivative of avermectin. It is derived from doramectin.

Effects

Selamectin (ATCvet QP54AA05) has antiparasitic properties with a broad spectrum of activity. It kills eggs, larvae, and adult fleas and is effective for up to 4 weeks. Selamectin spreads through the coat and is poorly absorbed into the bloodstream in dogs. In cats, a relevant proportion of the active ingredient enters the blood through the skin. The effects are based on binding to chloride channels in the nervous system of the parasites.

Indications

Selamectin is used in cats and dogs for the prevention and treatment of flea infestation. It is also effective against heartworm disease, ear mite infestation, roundworms, hookworms, hair lice, and canine mange.
