Self-healing Forces: Function, Tasks, Role & Diseases

Diseases and ailments can often disappear all by themselves, many people have experienced this themselves. When this happens, the self-healing powers are at work, which we all possess and whose power is often underestimated by doctors.

What are self-healing powers?

The term “self-healing powers” is a paraphrase of the inner abilities and powers a person possesses to overcome and heal illnesses and ailments on their own. The term “self-healing powers” is a paraphrase of the inner abilities and powers a person possesses to overcome and heal diseases and ailments by his own efforts. The self-healing powers are an important part of any form of therapy. Nowadays, the view has prevailed that, in the case of complaints of all kinds, a doctor should be consulted as soon as possible, so that he can look for the cause and initiate treatment. However, it can make sense to wait and see if the symptoms disappear on their own. In many cases they do. However, in some cases, it is life-saving to seek medical care immediately. Neurobiologists have found through research that we can both strengthen and weaken self-healing powers through the brain.

Function and task

Recent neurobiological research shows that the body has its own intelligence, with which it is possible to bring about the healing of wounds, recognize dangers and initiate healing processes. Naturopathy has always known this and treats diseases and ailments by gently stimulating the self-healing powers. In modern orthodox medicine, however, too little importance is often attached to these forces. For a long time, herniated discs, for example, were frequently operated on, often with unsatisfactory results. In the meantime, orthopedists have recognized that many operations are unnecessary and that the spine can regenerate itself through appropriate movements. But how does the body manage to initiate suitable measures on its own and set healing in motion? All physical processes are a finely tuned interaction. If we are mentally and physically healthy, this harmonious interplay of forces functions. However, it can easily be disturbed by influences that are immediately registered by the brain. The forces are then on the alert and, like a thermostat, reacts immediately with measures to restore balance. If we accidentally cut our finger, the body immediately sends white blood cells toward the wound to prevent germs from entering the body through the wound. In the case of bone fractures, the bone grows back together on its own; it only needs to be straightened and supported. Albert Schweitzer was already convinced that every human being has an inner doctor within himself who can be activated at any time. A trust in one’s own body and the ability to feel into it strengthens the healing abilities. Some people can mobilize tremendous self-healing powers and even survive serious illnesses. For example, there are always cases where conventional medicine gives up on terminally ill people and they still survive. Neurobiologists have been able to find out that trust has a positive effect on self-healing powers. Therefore, trust between doctor and patient is also becoming increasingly important.

Diseases and ailments

Since the self-healing powers react very easily to negative inner messages, people who do not believe in an improvement or healing of their complaints have a harder time. Not for nothing there is the saying “faith moves mountains”. It shows that self-healing abilities are very much dependent on what a person trusts. The fatal influence of negative expectations can be seen in practices such as voodoo magic. In these rituals, believing people who have previously been declared dead by a medicine man can die without there having to be a biological cause. This shows how closely connected the body and mind are. If we fail to recognize these connections and harm the body, it will have a reverse effect on the soul and spirit. We can significantly contribute to whether our self-healing powers are strengthened or weakened. Those who eat poorly, take in too little fluid and are regularly deprived of sleep ensure in this way that the self-healing powers are weakened and can no longer support the body as well in healing complaints. Excessive stress also has a negative effect. Those who always demand more from themselves than they can achieve lose their inner balance and are no longer as well equipped to fight illnesses. What a strong influence the self-healing powers have, doctors can perceive in patients in whom the same disease progresses differently. Often in treatments a symptom fight made without thereby sufficiently on the actual causes of the complaints to deal and the body thereby to help itself. Especially the latest findings of neurobiology scientifically prove that body and mind form an inseparable unit. The ability to self-heal is inherent in all people, if they do not overload themselves in the long run and lead their lives in a healthy balance. A negative attitude of expectation acts like a self-fulfilling prophecy, whereas a positive confidence strengthens the capacity for self-healing. A good example of this power is the prescription of placebo medications that can heal despite the lack of active ingredients.
