Sesame oil is used in medicinal products as an excipient.

Structure and properties

Refined sesame oil is the fatty oil obtained from the ripe seeds of L. of the sesame family by pressing or by extraction and subsequent refining. It exists as a clear, pale yellow to almost colorless liquid and is practically insoluble in water. At about -4 °C, the oil solidifies to a buttery mass. The major fatty acids in sesame oil include linolenic acid, oleic acid and palmitic acid.

Areas of application

  • As a pharmaceutical excipient, for the manufacture of pharmaceuticals and personal care products.
  • As a skin care agent.
  • As a solvent for fat-soluble substances and active ingredients (eg injections).
  • As a food and dietary supplement. For example, sesame oil is a component of tahina paste, which is contained in hummus.
