Shepherd’s Purse: Effect and Side Effects

Shepherd’s purse herb, when administered parenterally, for example when injected into the veins, has a blood pressure-lowering effect in low doses, but a blood pressure-increasing effect in higher doses. In addition, the herb leads to an increase in heart rate (positive chronotropy) and cardiac strength (positive inotropy) as well as to an increased contraction of the uterus (uterine contraction).

A local hemostatic effect has been observed on extracts of the herb, presumably due to a specific peptide. Anti-inflammatory and diuretic effects have also been shown in animal studies. However, a confirmed explanation of the clinically observed effects does not currently exist.
