Should a child take a toothpaste with or without fluoride?

Fluorides have been shown to reduce the development of caries in children and adolescents.Although tooth decay is not a disease based on a lack of fluoride, fluoride can strengthen the enamel and protect it from acid attacks. A child should therefore use a toothpaste containing fluoride. There are several ways in which a child can take fluoride.

Besides table salt and gels, the use of special children’s toothpaste is very useful. This toothpaste has a lower fluoride content than the toothpaste for adults. One reason for this is that children swallow the toothpaste quickly once when brushing their teeth daily and fluorosis, i.e. excessive fluoride intake, can be prevented.

Scientists have proven that fluoride can have an optimal effect directly (locally) on the enamel, i.e. by using toothpaste containing fluoride. For this reason, fluoride-containing toothpastes and fluoride gels are very useful because they are in direct contact with their ultimate site of action.
