Side effects after discontinuation

An abrupt cessation can lead to dizziness, depression, diarrhea, insomnia, headaches, nervousness, flu-like symptoms, pain and sweating. Therefore, a slow, gradual discontinuation of Lyrica® is highly recommended. This should be done in consultation with the doctor.

Special features of taking Lyrica®

There are other special features that should be taken into account when taking Lyrica® in certain patient groups. In diabetic patients, taking Lyrica® can lead to unwanted weight gain. In this case, the antidiabetic medication must be re-dosed.

Due to the sedative effect, Lyrica® can lead to weight gain, especially in older patients, where the risk of falling is significantly increased. Until the individual effect of Lyrica® is known, older patients in particular should be careful. In rare cases, Lyrica® can cause side effects on the eye.

These manifest themselves as blurred vision up to loss of visual acuity. Most of the time, these side effects are temporary and disappear after discontinuation of the drug. However, it is important to be aware of this while working, especially with machines, and driving a motor vehicle.

  • Confusion and mental retardation.

Addiction potential of Lyrica®

Furthermore, Lyrica® shows an addictive potential which can lead to withdrawal symptoms after discontinuation. Some patients experience withdrawal symptoms. There is no known maximum duration of therapy below which withdrawal symptoms do not occur.

The withdrawal symptoms are very individual and do not occur in every patient. Withdrawal symptoms can be prevented to a large extent by a slowly gradual dosage. If the side effects occur nevertheless, they can be controlled with light medication and will disappear after a few days.

Furthermore, Lyrica® may increase the side effects of some medications. These can increase respiratory insufficiency, coma, drowsiness, drowsiness and lack of concentration. In particular, these serious side effects occur in combination with drugs containing oxycodone, lorazepam or alcohol. In general, however, Lyrica® is less likely to cause adverse effects than the classic antiepileptic drugs.
