Side effects | Can Diclofenac be bought over the counter?

Side effects

The type of side effects that can be caused by a drug are also included in the assessment of whether a drug is dispensed over the counter or as a prescription. Severe side effects at already low doses would practically rule out over-the-counter prescriptions, while slight possible side effects at medium doses, such as diclofenac, would more likely lead to over-the-counter prescriptions. In the case of diclofenac, regular use in the range of medium doses may cause stomach upset, nausea and discomfort. If a stomach ulcer is already known, there is also a risk of gastric bleeding. Studies have shown that the risk of a serious adverse reaction with Diclofenac is greatest when the maximum daily dose (150 mg) is reached. This is one of the reasons why Diclofenac in the 75 mg dosage is only available on prescription.

Overdose

What could trigger an accidental or intentional overdose for side effects is also included whether a drug is given over the counter or on prescription. The easier a drug is to overdose, the more likely it is to be given as a prescription.
