Side effects

Possible side effects of oxytocin as an infusion are:

  • Blood pressure rise
  • Accelerated or slowed heartbeat
  • Cardiac arrhythmias
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Headaches

Interaction

Oxytocin may interact with other drugs. The most notable effect is the increasing effect in combination with other contraction-promoting drugs such as prostaglandins or ergot alkaloids. In combination with the latter, it can also lead to a life-threatening hypertension crisis.

However, it should be remembered that due to lack of approval there is no comprehensive information about the drug, so no one can guarantee that the pill is fully effective. In case of doubt the prescribing physician should be consulted. You can find out everything about the Pill at Which drugs influence the effect of the Pill

Oxytocin should never be used during pregnancy or childbirth as it can induce labor (unless the induction of labor by oxytocin is desired). Furthermore, oxytocin must not be used up to six hours after intravaginal prostaglandin application.A possible hypersensitivity to the active substance must also be considered.
