Side effects | Tavegil®

Side effects

As with any medication, there may be some side effects when taking Tavegil®, regardless of the dosage form. Very often this leads to pronounced fatigue. This is due to the fact that the active ingredient is attached to certain receptors in the brain.

The active ingredient clemastine belongs to the group of 1st generation H1 receptor inhibitors. This means that this generation, in contrast to subsequent generations, also has an effect in the brain, which can lead to increased fatigue. If this effect is not desired, one should fall back on preparations of the 2nd or 3rd generation when treating an allergy.

Dry mouth and headaches, but also dizziness can occasionally occur as side effects. Skin reactions, nausea and constipation can also occur. Rather rarely does an increase in heart rate occur when taking Tavegil®. Symptoms of overdose may include disorientation, cramps, or fatigue and drowsiness. Other symptoms may include low blood pressure, coma, dry mouth, or gastrointestinal discomfort associated with an overdose.

Interactions

Interactions can occur when Tavegil® is taken at the same time as other medicines. In this case, the effect of Tavegil® is particularly enhanced. Painkillers, sleeping pills or even psychotropic drugs can increase the effect of Tavegil®.

Anaesthetics or the consumption of alcohol also lead to an intensification of the effect. So-called monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAO inhibitors), which are used in the treatment of depression, among other things, reinforce the anticholinergic effect of Tavegil®s. Anticholinergic means an inhibition of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which is primarily responsible for transmitting the action of the parasympathetic nervous system in the body.

The anticholinergic effect of Tavegil® is manifested in dry mouth, constipation and urinary retention, but also in dilated pupils and a rapid heart rate. The parallel use of Tavegil® and a specific group of antibiotics belonging to the macrolide group (example substances are erythromycin, clarithromycin) should be avoided. Likewise, the simultaneous use of Tavegil® with “azole-type” drugs for fungal diseases should be avoided.
