Side effects

The opioid receptors as the target of Tramundin® are localized at some organs in the body, which results in the manifold and sometimes serious side effects that should be considered before taking Tramundin®. The influence on the above-mentioned messenger quantities further extends the spectrum of possible undesirable side effects. The most common adverse effects include nausea, vomiting, headaches, dizziness, constipation, drowsiness, dry mouth, sweating and exhaustion.

Occasionally, circulatory problems occur, which can manifest themselves as palpitations, increased heart rate, weakness and circulatory collapse. In addition, diarrhea and skin reactions may occur as side effects. Rarely observed effects can be found in the package insert and should be discussed immediately with the doctor in charge.Like other opioids, Tramundin® can be misused as an intoxicant, can lead to dependency and trigger typical withdrawal symptoms after discontinuation.

Contraindications

Tramundin® must not be used if the affected person is hypersensitive to individual components of the drug, if there is acute poisoning by alcohol, sleeping pills, painkillers, opioids or other psychotropic drugs, if the person is treated with MAO-inhibitors (antidepressants) at the same time or 14 days prior to treatment and if the person has epilepsy which cannot be controlled sufficiently despite treatment. In addition, there is always the risk of interactions when different drugs are taken simultaneously. One example is carbamazepine, an active ingredient in epilepsy therapy.

It accelerates the breakdown of Tramundin® in the liver, thus shortening and thus reducing its effect. The reverse effect is often observed in the presence of certain antibiotics or antifungals. Inhibition of Tramundin® degradation results in a longer duration of action and ultimately a stronger effect at the same dosage.

Furthermore, the simultaneous intake of attenuating substances such as sleeping pills, tranquilizers and alcohol should be avoided. These can strengthen the already damping effect of Tramundin® and lead to life-threatening conditions. Just as dangerous is the serotonin syndrome, which threatens if drugs are taken at the same time that cause a further increase in the messenger substance serotonin, as many antidepressants do.

The possibly fatal symptoms are due to an increased serotonin effect. An overdose of Tramundin® can be attenuated with opioid antagonists.
